TRIAL: ArchiveGrid

Filed under: Database trials, Non-Scholars Portal databases — ereport @ 11:31 am

UPDATE (2007.07.02): It seems that the IP-restricted URL that used to be  here doesn’t provide access; you’ll have to go to the (password-protected) staff database trials page to get the username and password that does work.

From the vendor:

ArchiveGrid is an important destination for searching through historical documents, personal papers, and family histories held in archives around the world.

Thousands of libraries, museums, and archives have contributed nearly a million collection descriptions to ArchiveGrid. Researchers searching ArchiveGrid can learn about the many items in each of these collections, contact archives to arrange a visit to examine materials, and order copies.

  2. From the first screen, click on the Continue button.
  3. Choose “Journals at Ovid Full Text”
  4. On the right side of next screen, click on “Browse journals”
  5. Click on “Browse journals A-Z”
  6. Click on “S
  7. Scroll down to the title “Seminars in Speech and Language”; once there, click on “Issue List” to see back issues, or “About this Journal” to get more details.

Access is available until 2007.07.19

Wilson databases back up

Filed under: Non-Scholars Portal databases, Outages — ereport @ 3:43 pm

From the vendor:

Dear Customer,As you may be aware, we experienced a disruption of our internet service from approximately 7:15 a.m. to 9 p.m. EDT, yesterday that affected all Wilson subscribers. This disruption included access to WilsonWeb, our homepage site, as well as our telephone and email.

We are very sorry for this inconvenience. Construction crews installing a water main at a nearby construction site severed a major network fiber backbone that provided internet and voice communications to all companies located our area of the Bronx, NY.

Again, please accept our apologies for this unfortunate situation. We are investigating ways to prevent any similar disruptions in the future.

Thank you.
Sincerely,
Deborah Loeding

SFX downtime this Friday

Filed under: Outages, Scholars Portal & related — ereport @ 10:52 am

From the Scholars Portal folks:

Please inform users that SFX will be down for 2 hours from 5-7pm Friday 15th June (it could be as fast as an hour, but if anything goes wrong, it will take much longer. Hence the 2 hours window). As always, I will post a note when we’re done with both updates.

We will be applying the June KB/SW updates. Please note that this SW update does require downtime as it. To quote Tulie Amira @ Exlibris, “This is due to additional Perl modules Ex Libris distributed in this package to support enhancements to the new A-Z List. The downtime will complete before the main KBDB program begins. “

Please note that this update bring new, exciting functionality to the A-Z list. Below is an excerpt from “The definitive book of everything SFX” (aka the monthly email that exlibris sends out):

*This revision contains a significant development consisting of a new SFX A-Z List, including the following highlights*:

  • Improved performance
  • Improved navigation of search results
  • Improved search capabilities
  • CJK support
  • A-Z list support for searching, sorting and display of SFX titles in Chinese/Korean languages
  •  Addition of regional template headers to cater to special Asian/European locales (based on both language and country) (add screenshot of Chinese and Taiwanese A-Z headers)
  • Ability to display multiple linguistic/locale headers
  • Improved handling of diacritics of Latin language – based on language sorting rules
  • Integration of the popular CitationLinker form in the A-Z List

problem with Wilson databases

Filed under: Non-Scholars Portal databases, Outages — ereport @ 3:26 pm

A problem has been reported with Book Review Digest Retrospective and Reader’s Guide Abstracts; attempts to reach them result in the following error message:

“Unable to locate address for vnweb.hwwilsonweb.com, please try again later.”

As these are both Wilson products, other Wilson databases are likely having the same problem. I’ll let you know what’s happening when I find out.

TRIAL: PapersInvited

Filed under: Database trials, Scholars Portal & related — ereport @ 10:19 am

PapersInvited

Access restricted to the yorku.ca domain.

From the vendor:

“This database consists of detailed information and deadlines about calls for papers for forthcoming conferences and special issues of scholarly journals. These calls for papers are issued by professional bodies, journal editors and other conference organizers in all disciplines and from all over the world. Thus, the database serves as an alerting service for researchers, scholars and students that are seeking opportunities to present and publish their research.

Approximately 10,000 conferences are listed each year along with 1,200-1,500 special issues. These are fully searchable by name, acronym, organizer, location, publisher, topic and other fields. Important dates such as Last Day for Submission of Abstracts or Manuscripts are clearly labeled and are provided well in advance of the event or proposed publication date. A personal alert can be set-up based on any number of keywords and parameters that generates an email notification of newly-announced conferences and publications of interest; new content is added three times per month.

Subject Coverage

All calls for papers have been classified by specific disciplines within the following broad areas of specialization:

  • Arts, architecture, music, and sports
  • Biotechnology and genetic engineering
  • Computers and information technology
  • Engineering and technology
  • Generalities, library science, and journalism
  • Geography and history
  • Human biology, medicine, and health sciences
  • Literature and languages
  • Management and related areas
  • Mathematical sciences and astronomy
  • Natural sciences
  • Philosophy, religion and mythology
  • Psychology and other related fields
  • Social sciences

Dates of Coverage
Current. Scheduled conferences are only listed once the call for papers has been issued; this may occur several years in advance of the event itself. Events that have happened are removed from the database daily.

Update Frequency
Three times per month, with at least 200 new records added.

Size
Over 7,605 records as of June 2007. These represent events that are scheduled to happen; past events are removed from the database.

Problem with PsycBooks

Filed under: Scholars Portal & related — ereport @ 10:17 am

As reported on the scholarsportal list:

There seems to be a problem with accessing PsycBooks tables of contents on Scholars Portal Search. I can do searches fine and get a  list of results. Pulling up the .pdf of a chapter does not appear to be a problem, but anytime I click on the Table of Contents link for any title, I get the following message:

Fatal error: Call to undefined method browse_records_client::records_client()
in */csa/ids/build/ids7/ids70/php/www/browse/toc.php* on line *6*

This has been reported to CSA, and they are working on it.
